Section 1 : Welcome to the Course!

  • Lecture 1 :
  • Whether you just starting your university program in business or you are someone looking to build competency in finance, this course is for you. This course will take a practical approach to considering how finance theory is applied in the business world. The course covers many of the key principles that embody corporate finance and gives participants a comprehensive appreciation of the finance discipline. Whether you are aspiring for a career in finance or looking to round out your appreciation of the financial concepts, this course is designed to cover off such topics as financial analysis, forecasting, present value, future value, rate of return, use of debt leverage, and risk management, including derivative instruments.

Section 2 : Financial Analysis

  • Lecture 1 :
  • Financial Analysis
  • Financial analysis is a core skill in finance. It involves analyzing and interpreting financial information to evaluate performance or set future expectations. In this lesson, I’ll give an overview, but you should also consider taking our in-depth financial literacy course to supplement this lesson.

Section 3 : Cash Forecast

  • Lecture 1 :
  • Cash Forecast
  • Finance often trying to predict the future. The cash flow forecast is the foundation of many types of financial analysis. In this lesson, we give an overview of what's involved.

Section 4 : Present Value

  • Lecture 1 :
  • Present Value
  • In finance, we always want to ensure we are comparing apple-to-apples. One way we do this is to calculate the present value of different types of opportunities. This puts all the different projects on an even footing. It's an economic perspective of value, not an accounting perspective. In this lesson, I’ll teach you the basics of calculating present value.

Section 5 : Future Value

  • Lecture 1 :
  • Future Value
  • Sometimes we want to know how much money we will have at a date in the future. When this is the objective, we need to calculate future value. In this lesson, I am going to go through the basics of how to approach this calculation using a retirement planning context.

Section 6 : Rate of Return and Adding Debt

  • Lecture 1 :
  • Rate of Return and Adding Debt
  • Things get a little more interesting in this lesson. I begin with an overview of what is debt and equity and discuss how the rate of return for these instruments is determined. Then I will talk about how debt, when used responsibly, can be used to leverage returns or minimize the cost of capital. This is one key way that corporate finance can add significant value to the organization.

Section 7 : Risk Management and Derivatives

  • Lecture 1 :
  • Risk Management and Derivatives
  • Risk management can be a very complicated topic, but in this lesson, let's see if I can make it simpler for you to understand. Even some finance professionals shudder when you mention the idea of a derivative instrument. Let's face it, they've got a bit of a bad rep for the role they played in the last Great Recession. However, these instruments are another important corporate finance tool for managing and mitigating financial risks to a business. So let's not get scared off by them. Instead, let's see if we can sort them out together.

Section 8 : Finance in Practice

  • Lecture 1 :
  • Finance in Practice
  • So now that you have a few of the really important corporate finance principles under your belt, let me show you how finance get's used in practice by taking a virtual tour of the finance department. What you'll notice is that finance is pervasive knowledge topic that has implications for many roles in the finance function.
